There's a myth that cyberattacks only happen to big companies. In reality, small businesses are targeted precisely because they tend to have weaker defences. The good news: most attacks rely on a handful of avoidable weaknesses. Close these and you're ahead of the majority.
The checklist
1. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) everywhere
A stolen password is useless if a second factor is required. Enable MFA on email, banking, and every business account that offers it. This single step blocks the overwhelming majority of account takeovers.
2. Use a password manager

3. Keep everything updated
Most successful attacks exploit known bugs that already have fixes. Enable automatic updates on devices, browsers, and any software you run.
4. Back up — and test the backup
Ransomware is survivable if you have clean, recent backups. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two types of media, one off-site. Then actually try restoring one.
5. Train your team on phishing
Your staff are the front line. A five-minute conversation about not clicking suspicious links or approving unexpected MFA prompts prevents most breaches.
6. Secure your website

7. Limit who has access to what
Not everyone needs admin rights. Give each person the minimum access they need to do their job.
8. Separate business and personal
Don't run the business on a personal email account or a shared family laptop.
9. Have a plan for when something goes wrong
Write down: who to call, how to isolate an infected machine, where the backups are. A plan made calmly beats decisions made in panic.
10. Know your data
You can't protect what you don't know you have. List where customer data lives, and delete what you no longer need.
