Frequently asked questions

Who is entitled to gratuity in Sri Lanka?

Under the Payment of Gratuity Act No. 12 of 1983, employees who complete 5 or more years of continuous service with an employer who has 15 or more workers are entitled to gratuity when they leave.

How is gratuity calculated?

The standard formula is half a month's salary (basic + allowances) for each completed year of service — technically 15/30 of the last drawn salary per year for post-EPF service. It must be paid within 30 days of leaving.
