Margin = profit ÷ selling price. Markup = profit ÷ cost. They are not the same — a 50% markup is only a 33% margin. Mixing them up is one of the most common — and costly — pricing mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price; markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. They are different numbers for the same sale — a 50% markup is only a 33% margin. Confusing the two is a common cause of under-pricing.
Can it work backwards from a target margin?
Yes — enter your cost and the margin (or markup) you want, and it tells you the selling price to set.
